Description:

This is an example of one of the Model 1860 Military Style rifles shipped to the U.S. Navy during the Civil War. A total of 1,009 Spencer rifles were ordered by the Navy during the Civil War and, of those, 709 had a lug for a saber bayonet. The remaining three hundred were from Army Model stock on hand. The top of the receiver is marked "SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS/PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860". The top breech end of the barrel is marked with an anchor, and the serial number is marked on the top rear of the receiver. It has a brass blade front sight that doubles as a bayonet lug and folding ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The receiver and lever were casehardened, while the remaining surfaces are blue. Mounted with a smooth full length walnut forearm secured by three barrel bands with a steel end cap. Sling swivels are found on the middle band and bottom of the straight grip stock which has a steel buttplate. "75" is stamped on the left side of the butt.

Rating Definition:

Very good. Most of the surfaces have an even brown patina while the frame has a more mottled patina. There are some scratches, nicks, and minor pitting throughout including a few scattered patches of more significant pitting. The wood is good with some small slivers and chips absent, some scattered light scratches and pressure marks, and a few minor gouges. Mechanically excellent with crisp markings.
