Description:

Less than 1,000 Peabody-Martini rifles in the various sporting configurations are estimated to have been manufactured between 1875 and the 1880s with very few of those Creedmoors. This one is the Creedmoor model meant for long range target shooting such as the famous matches at the Creedmoor Rifle Range on Long Island, relatively few of these were manufactured, and fewer still remain in this exceptional condition. It has an windgauge globe front sight with spirit level, "MANUFACTURED BY THE PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. PROVIDENCE R.I. U.S.A." and "44 CAL./100 GRS." on top of the barrel, the matching serial number on the undersize of barrel and interior forearm, long range Vernier peep sight numbered to the gun with second matching numbered base on the heel for firing from the back position, "23" visible on the right side of the trigger, "PEABODY & MARTINI PATENTS" inscribed on the right side of the action along with an engraved lined border and light scrolls, "Creedmoor" on the left with coordinating engraving, and checkering on the forearm and semi-pistol grip stock.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine with 50% plus original blue finish and original case colors, some minor surface oxidation, crisp markings and engraving, and mild overall wear. The wood is fine and has some scrapes in the otherwise crisp checkering, some scrapes and dents, and smooth finish. Mechanically fine.
