Extraordinary, Unique and Scarce L.C. Kersey, San Francisco Marked Percussion Combination Rifle over Shotgun

Percussion combination guns are distinctive 19th century American firearms and show a lot of ingenuity in design. While over/under and side by side combination guns are fairly common in some regions, three barrel combination guns or "drillings" like this are scarce. This longarm has two .38 caliber rifled barrels over an approximately .65 caliber smoothbore shot barrel, the opposite of the popular German centerfire cartridge drillings. These are rarer in part due to the greater difficulty in regulating double rifles. The left trigger controls both the left rifled barrel and the lower shot barrel. If both hammers are cocked at the same time, both of those hammers will drop. The trigger guard serves as the mainspring for the lower hammer which locks on the front of the left trigger. All in all, a rather simple solution to a complex situation. Levi Charles Kersey (1827-1885) originally worked for William Billinghurst in New York in the 1850s and later worked for Clabrough & Brothers in San Francisco in the 1870s. He was a gunsmith and marksman until his death in 1885. The flat upper rib has a dovetail mounted German silver "Rocky Mountain" blade front sight and an adjustable notch rear sight and a threaded adjustable peep sight is fitted into the upper tang. The only markings are "L.C. KERSEY" on the lower tang and "L.C. KERSEY" followed by "SAN FRANCISCO" in a smaller font as well the "GTON" and "STEEL" markings from Remington on the lower barrel. The ramrod for the rifled bores is fitted on the right, and the smoothbore ramrod is fitted on the left side. The unmarked back action locks and the furniture are casehardened. The stock is varnished walnut.

ConditionExcellent with 95% plus bright original blue finish on the barrels, 98% of the vivid original case colors on the locks and furniture, some pitting on the left barrel near the muzzle and otherwise minor spots of wear on the barrels, and generally only light handling and storage marks. The stock is also excellent and retains nearly all of the original glossy varnish and has only light dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. Without a doubt the finest example of its type!
