Description:

Only an estimated 1,376 Trapdoor 20 gauge "forager" shotguns were manufactured in the early 1880s. They were designed for 20 gauge brass shotgun shells and were used by hunters and scouts primarily at western outposts in the late 19th century. Some were even used into the very early 20th century. It has standard markings, the correct two-click tumbler, special extractor, carbine buttplate and trigger guard, faint cartouche on the left wrist, and a "40" marked brass display type escutcheon on the right of the buttstock. Includes two 10-count Frankford Arsenal shotgun shell boxes, one with 10 brass casings and one with 10 steel casings.

Rating Definition:

Very good, showing mostly a cleaned grey patina with some traces of thinned blue finish and case colors present on the lock plate and buttplate, some cold blue touch up near the muzzle, and a series of minor dings on the breechblock. The front sight bead is absent. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood is also very good with some minor dings and scratches scattered throughout, a few scattered minor chips, and a faint but visible cartouche. Mechanically excellent. The shotgun shell boxes are good with some moderate wear and some tears and the casings are generally very good.
