Description:

This is a late WWII K98 rifle manufactured by the Mauser factory that has been assembled as a German high turret sniper rifle and fitted with a "bmj" marked sniper scope. The turret mounted sniper rifles were used from 1939 through 1945 and were considered one of the best German sniper rifles during the war. The top of the receiver is covered by the turret base; however, it probably has a "byf/44" or "45" marked receiver ring. The left side of the receiver has a single "Eagle/135" acceptance proof, and the left side of both the receiver and the barrel have a large single "Eagle." The receiver side wall has the block style "Mod. 98" markings. The left rear scope base is stamped with a single "Eagle/135" proof, and a small letter "O " is stamped on the front base. The rifle is fitted with a standard wartime, laminated handguard and stock that is fitted with a checkered cupped buttplate. The right side of the buttstock and inside of the pistol grip are stamped with an "Eagle/WaA135" Waffenamt proofmark. The rifle has all stamped components, with serial numbered barrel bands, each stamped "6489" with a unnumbered but proofed, stamped trigger guard and floor plate. The bolt is fitted with a nonmatching replacement scope "key" safety. The rifle has a standard front sight and the military style tangent rear sight graduated to 2000 meters. As noted, this rifle has a blued "bmj" marked sniper scope that is marked on the left side, "DIALYTAN 4x 70285/bmj". The elevation ring is numbered 1-8 (100-800 meters), and it has the late rain shield on the front end. This rifle is complete with the push on front sight cover with the folding muzzle cover and leather lens caps.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 60% of the thinned wartime phosphate finish overall with wear on the exposed metal surfaces to include the turret scope bases. The stock and handguard are both in fine condition with a nice color overall showing visible acceptance proofs on the sides, and showing only minor handling marks. There was a duffle bag cut under the front barrel band so the forend tip area and end cap are slightly shorter/set back more than normal. The safety is a replacement (see above). The scope retains 25% of its blued finish overall mixed with a gray/brown patina. The markings on the scope are sharp, and the optics are clear.
