Description:

Constructed from steel and finished in a deep green paint overall, this helmet bears the features (integrally stamped vents and unrolled edges) of the wartime German 1942-pattern stahlhelm combat helmet, with the single black-on-silver "double rune" decal of the Waffen-SS on the right side. Across the exterior, a mesh of wire has been applied, and extremely popular field modification that would break up the profile of the helmet on it's own while also providing a mounting point for sections of cloth, local foliage, and other camouflage items. While most seen examples are made of stolen chicken wire, the person who crafted this setup worked with single lengths of wire, interlacing them in a "spiderweb" pattern with hand-bent loops in the wires crossing the crown to both support the horizontal wires and make the camouflage process easier. The interior is stamped "D295" in the back and "NS66" on the left, with brown leather webbing and a black leather chinstrap, which bears a set of SS runes and a faint inventory number on the inside. The consignor attributes the item as having been field-captured by a British soldier in the Normandy region of France following the D-Day Invasion; particular details about the soldier or the circumstances of acquisition were not provided, though the writer has no reason to dispute the claim.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall, showing some spots of oxidization on the interior and mild handling marks overall. Much of the exterior wear has come from the wire net, which has shifted and rubbed against the paint in expected fashion. The webbing shows wear and stains appropriate to age, and the reproduction chinstrap is cracking slightly but generally remains solid and supple.
