Description:

Founded post-WWI out of a group of mustered-out army engineers, Technische Nothilfe (TeNo) was later absorbed by the Order Police, indirectly becoming the engineering corps for the SS. In addition to national disaster response, TeNo was also responsible for cleaning up captured areas in the wake of Nazi occupation, and restoring essential services following bombing raids. Though the organization was very large, only the small number of full time subordinate members were able to receive the hewer. 14 3/4 inches overall, with a 9 3/4 inch single fuller clip point blade, with "5210" on the right ricasso and the TeNo acceptance proof over the Eickhorn logo on the left side. Nickel finished hilt components, with the TeNo eagle on the single quillion cross guard, stylized gear on the pommel, and smooth white plastic grips. Black enamel painted sheath, with nickel finished tip and matching numbered throat, and a black leather belt hanger with gate clip. The consignor attributes this hewer as a war trophy taken by an ancestor, a Lieutenant Colonel Albert M. Butler of the 35th Infantry Division, while liberating a French bridge from the Germans in 1944. LTC Butler's exact wartime activities are unrecorded, but the 35th arrived in France via Omaha Beach on D-Day, earned 7 Distinguished Unit Citations and 22 Meritorious Service Unit Plaques, along with 3435 Bronze Stars, 688 Silver Stars, 44 Distinguished Service Crosses and one Medal of Honor.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, with some light handling marks overall. The retention strap on the hanger is torn, otherwise the sheath assembly is good with mild wear and dings.
