Description:

Issued to Luftwaffe bomber crews active in Africa and the Mediterranean, the M30 Drilling was intended for taking wild game in the field to extend a downed crew's food supply until they could be rescued. In contrast to it's American counterparts, which were heavily simplified, designed to fit in the minimum space possible, and optimized for taking smaller game, the M30 was a European sport gun in full form, with no sacrifice in fit and finish, no special modifications for size, and enough firepower to kill about any prey animal in Europe, chambering 12 gauge shells in the upper barrels and a belted 9.3x74mm round in the lower, rifled barrel. Both upper barrels bear the Krupp steel and Sauer markings, with a fixed blade front sight and a pop-up notch rear sight controlled by the barrel selector switch on the upper tang. The lower lugs bear the Sauer "wildman" logo and the Luftwaffe "eagle/L2" proofs, with "12/65" on the underside of the shotgun barrels, "9,3x74R" and "941" on the rifle chamber, "eagle/N" on multiple components and matching numbers on the frame, rifle barrel and forearm. The frame is finely case-hardened with light decorative engraving, featuring dual triggers, a Greener style safety, a set of cocking indicator pins and "W.St." marked on the upper tang. The stock is finely checkered on the forearm and pistol grip, with a right handed cheekpiece, a prominent Luftwaffe eagle on the right side, and an unmarked "white line" style recoil pad. Included with the Drilling is a combination of vintage and modern accessories, most prominently, the gray painted alloy storage case intended to hold the Drilling and it's compliment of ammo and accessories. Also in the case are 16 rounds of 9.3x74 ammo, (mixed live and inert, uncertain vintage), cleaning rods, a pair of snap caps, a brown leather sling, cleaning rods, a bore swab, and a "Rekord" brand 12 gauge to 22 LR conversion sleeve with box. A checkered buttplate with Sauer monogram, possibly the original buttplate, is also included.

Rating Definition:

Fine, with 80% plus original blue finish, showing some minor handling marks overall. The frame is turning silver at the front and on the wrist, with 60% bright case color concentrated around the triggers and recoil shield, with fine detail in the engraving. The refinished stock is very good with added recoil pad, a round filler on the right side ahead of the wrist, a stabilized crack on the left, a few dings on the otherwise crisp checkering. The case is fine, with cracking of the otherwise good handle, and general wear appropriate to age and travel. The conversion unit box is coming apart and the ammo boxes are missing some portions, otherwise the accessories are in good order. Mechanically excellent.
