Description:

Manufactured about 1923-1930, this fine Mauser pistol is marked on the left side of the receiver with a set of 5 Chinese symbols that translate to "Shanghai Police Department". Shanghai in the early 20th century was a notoriously rough city, and would serve as the incubator for the training techniques of Fairbairn and Sykes, two of the most famous close-combat experts of the age. In their much-reprinted book "Shooting to Live" the gentlemen commented on the effectiveness of the high velocity Mauser pistol, both in terms of raw damage (noting an incident where a single 7.63mm round did enough harm to force the amputation of an arm) and intimidation. This particular Mauser can be seen on page 154 (bottom picture) of "The Broomhandle Pistol" by Wayne Erickson and Charles Pate. Blade front and 1000 yard tangent rear sights, with a "crown/crown/U" proof on the side of the chamber, the Mauser Oberndorf address on top of the chamber and on the right side of the frame, and a small ring hammer. Fitted with a pair of matching numbered 12-groove grips.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with 30% of the original blue finish, showing areas of brown and gray patina, spotting, edge wear and handling marks. The area under the grips is brown patina. The evenly worn grips are good, with some dings and scuffs. Mechanically excellent.
