Description:

This is a very interesting and rare Colt Model 1851 Navy. Most of the components on this revolver have no serial numbers. The "No Serial Number" '51 Navy revolvers are discussed in Swayze's "'51 Colt Navies" on page 217 where the author notes: "Although a few of these guns are known to exist, the reason for the lack of serial numbers is - to the Author's knowledge- unknown." One possible theory is that this revolver and others were made up near the end of production from remaining parts on hand. Some of the parts have very slight fit issues compared to the normal production revolvers. The cylinder on this revolver has "73607" with an "S" sub-inspection type marking to its right, and the arbor pin has "45." The face of the cylinder also has an asterisk indicating inspection through an Army contract, and the rear has a "P." The barrel has a rounded muzzle like some of the factory conversion revolvers, a brass cone front sight, the New York address, and the larger loading lever catch. The left side of the frame has "COLTS/PATENT/U.S." The trigger guard does not have a caliber marking. The back strap has an "A" sub-inspection type mark near the top. The grip frame is unplated brass which was standard for military contract revolvers. The grip has no markings.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% plus original blue finish on the barrel, 75% lightly faded original blue finish and a distinct roll scene on the cylinder, 90% original vibrant case colors, aged patina on the brass, and generally only minimal handling and storage type marks. Even most of the screws and the cylinder safety pins remain very fine and relatively untouched. The grip is likewise very fine and displays very limited handling and storage wear. Mechanically tight and functional. This is definitely an extraordinary '51 Navy both in terms of condition and rarity. Provenance: The John Fox Collection.
