Description:

This is an exceptional example of a Civil War Gwyn & Campbell, Type II breech loading percussion carbine. The carbine has the short breech lever, with latch, and flat hammer with beveled edges that are characteristic of Type II carbines. The part octagon barrel has a dull blue finish. The breechblock, buttplate, and upper receiver tang are a bright niter blue. The receiver, hammer, and loading lever are color casehardened. The stock is oil-finished walnut with the Ordnance inspector's script initials "WHR" in a rectangle on the left wrist. The lock plate is marked "Gwyn & Campbell" in a half circle over "PATENT/1863/HAMILTON O" in three lines. The serial number is located on the bottom of the barrel, receiver, and breechblock. The initials "PT" and "R" are stamped on the left barrel flat. Approximately 4000 Type II carbines were manufactured by Gwyn & Campbell and issued primarily to Federal Cavalry in the western theater of operations.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% of the original blue and 95% plus casehardened finish. The stock is in nearly new condition with a perfect inspection stamp. Mechanically excellent. It would be difficult to find a finer example of a Civil War Gwyn & Campbell carbine.
