Description:

The Model 1863 was manufactured by Remington through a contract for 12,501 rifles with the Ordnance Department. They were not issued during the war, and nearly 10,000 are reported to have been sold via Bannermans in the early 20th century. There are some reports that some Model 1863s were among the surplus arms sold to the French government for the Franco-Prussian War. This example has the standard markings and features including "1863" on the lock and barrel and has an original saber bayonet with "C" inspection marks and a leather scabbard.

Rating Definition:

Very good, retains traces of original blue finish mixed with a smooth dark grey patina and faint case color patterns in sheltered areas with the balance a brighter grey patina. The brass shows an attractive antique patina overall. There is some scattered light pitting. Mechanically excellent. The wood is fine with some minor dings and scratches scattered throughout, and some scattered minor chips on edges. The bayonet is good overall and the scabbard is good with the tip detached but included.
