Description:

The Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 First Issue Revolvers were the first successful American metallic cartridge revolvers. They were manufactured in 1857-1860, and originally advertised as Smith & Wesson's seven shooter, not by any model number. Soon after its introduction, however, the Model 1 name was adopted. The Model 1 referenced the S&W Number 1 cartridge that was used in the revolver. Only a little over 200 of the original First Type version were manufactured where the recoil plate rotates with the cylinder. They also have a "bayonet" style barrel catch. Note the barrel catch on this example is longer than the standard latch encountered on First and Second Types. Serial no. 25 is obviously a very early production gun, built at a time when S&W was still experimenting with the design features on a firearm that would become a highly popular model. The revolver features a low rounded blade front sight, "SMITH & WESSON. SPRINGFIELD. MASS." on top of the rib, a notch rear sight, 7-shot cylinder, rounded profile brass frame, and matching extremely low serial number "25" on the butt, barrel lug, cylinder, and both grip panels.

Rating Definition:

Fine as a rare extremely early production Model No. 1 First Issue First Type revolver. Some strong amounts of original blue finish remain on the barrel, otherwise the barrel and cylinder have a smooth brown-gray patina. The brass frame has an attractive untouched honey color appearance overall. The grips are also fine with minor handling marks and limited chipping at the edges. Mechanically fine. No. 25 with an extended bayonet latch is THE must have variation of the Model No. 1 for the serious S&W. No S&W collection can truly be complete without No. 25! Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
