The gun is listed by serial number on page 186 in "Arms & Accoutrements of The Mounted Police 1873-1973" by Phillips and Klancher. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address/King's patent dates in front of the rear sight, the brass elevator is marked "45-75", the upper tang is marked "MODEL. 1876.", and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. There is the letter "I" stamped on the bottom of the frame directly ahead of the trigger. Blade front sight and folding ladder "Spanish Meter" rear sight graduated 2-10 on the ladder and 1-5 on the left side of the base. A saddle ring and stud are mounted on the left rear of the receiver, Second Model dust cover rail attached to the receiver with two screws and dust cover with rear serrations. Mounted with a full forearm with iron end cap and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate. The right rear of the stock is stamped with the "NWMP" cartouche. The accompanying factory letter lists this carbine with a "large shank" barrel, "good quality stock," and Spanish meter sight when received in the warehouse on May 11, 1882 and shipped the same day.

Rating Definition:

Good, with traces of original blue finish in sheltered areas and the balance mostly a smooth grey patina with some scattered patches of light pitting and the dings and scratches associated with a frontier issued gun. The wood good with numerous dings and scratches throughout showing its many, and a six in crack in the forearm starting at the forend cap. Mechanically fine.
