Description:

This suit of handsomely decorated armor was likely built in early 20th century between 1900 and 1930 and shows a mix of features from slightly different styles of plate armor. The sabatons are of the type that were common from around 1500-1540 while the close helm is more at home in the late 16th century. The breastplate appears to be a 17th century munitions breastplate that was adapted for use in this later produced suit by being polished bright. The adornment is also of a slightly later period as the decoration on armor increased as the actual practical use of armor declined in favor of parade and tournament usage, a true example of style over substance. The entire suit shows beautifully executed acid etching running across all of the major components including tasteful adornment on the pauldron, couters, fauld, tasset, and sabatons. The suit stands on a wooden plinth with a carved face on the front and measures some 78 inches from the floor to the top of the helm’s comb.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall with an attractive aged look including some patina and some areas of light surface pitting, concentrated on the 17th century breastplate. The leather straps are also beautifully aged and appear to be quite functional. The etching is vivid and shows wonderful contrast to the polished steel. This would make a great addition to any collection!
