Description:

Manufactured in 1871. The engraved receiver features fine minimalist English style scroll patterns. The scrollwork extends to the lever, cartridge elevator and buttplate tang. The left side of the receiver is signed "BROQUA/&/SCHOLBERG," and the right side of the receiver is signed "CALLE DEL RINCON/139/MONTEVIDEO." Established in 1856, Broqua & Scholberg was a famed retailer and importer located in Montevideo, Uruguay. The carbine has the barrel band with integral front sight, two leaf folding carbine rear sight, saddle ring and staple on the left side of the frame and walnut stock with crescent brass buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included). The bolt retains its original rimfire firing pin. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address/King's Improvement patent dates ahead of the rear sight. The serial number is marked on the lower tang behind the trigger. The barrel and magazine are blue, the loading gate is niter blue, and the remaining surfaces are plated in nickel. Comes with a collection tag marked "B1086."

Rating Definition:

Fine as period retailer embellished. The barrel and magazine tube have a smooth artificial brown-gray patina. Slight traces of original niter blue remain on the loading gate. The remaining surfaces retain 75% period retailer applied nickel plating. The engraving and retailer marking are crisp. The wood is also fine with a couple surface chips and minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. A charming South American retailer engraved Model 1866 carbine.
