Description:

Manufactured c. 1841-1849 by Woodhead & Hartley of Sheffield, England. The overall length is 13 1/8 inches with a 8 3/4 inch clip point blade that is marked on the left "AMERICAN HUNTING KNIFE" along the spine and "WOODHEAD & HARTLEY/7 LAMBERT STREET/SHEFFIELD on the ricasso. The oval shaped guard and coffin handle are of German silver with an alligator on each side of the pommel and horn grip scales with an escutcheon on the left. A similar knife is pictured on p. 245 of "The Antique Bowie Knife Book" by Adams, Voyles, and Moss. The sheath is of brown leather with German silver fittings. "K020" collection inventory painted on sheath and cross guard.

Rating Definition:

Fine, the blade showing mostly a bright grey patina with some scattered patches of minor pitting and evidence of mild cleaning/sharpening. The guard/handle shows an attractive antique patina overall and the slightly ill-fitting grip scales have some light handling marks, chips, and a hairline crack. The sheath is good with some mild wear on the leather and fittings reattached with wire.
