Description:

Jean Gosuin (1745 -1808) was an influential figure in the French and Belgian gunmaking industry in the late 1700s and early 1800s. He was a leader in Liege until Nicholas Noel Boutet became the supervisor for the French Empire in 1804. He was also the director of Charleville Arsenal, owned Fabrique Nationale d'Armes de Herstal, founder of the Manufacture de Liege des Armes de Guerre, and more. These unusual firearms were originally manufactured as large pistols in the late 18th century but had shoulder stocks with cheekpieces and iron buttplates added in the period, likely because these weapons were unwieldy as pistols. The stocks are fitted through a slot in the engrave pommel caps and secured by screws that pass through both the wrists and the stock hardware. The etched pattern welded barrels flare to about 1 1/8 inches at the muzzles and have springing "snap" bayonets on top. The caliber is estimated above. The locks have some light engraving and are signed "Gosuin/Liege" at center. The brass furniture is engraved. The stocks have nice tear drop flats, raised relief floral carving at the top of the wrists, and silver wire scroll patterns on the back of the wrists.

Rating Definition:

Very good with gray patina and mild pitting on the iron, aged patina on the brass, general mild wear, a crack in the right side of the forend tip, some scrapes in the wood, and a crack ins the buttstock. The reconverted lock has a functional cock but ineffective frizzen. The bayonet mechanism works if aided when latching.

Rating Definition:

Very good with gray patina and mild pitting on the iron, natural aged patina on the brass, general mild overall wear, a sliver absent on the right side of the forend tip and crack on the opposite side, chip at the tail of the lock and around the buttstock screw, general scratches and dings in the wood, and a crack at the front of the buttstock on the right. The reconverted lock has a functional cock but ineffective frizzen. The bayonet mechanism works if aided when latching. Definitely an interesting pair of stocked blunderbuss pistols.
