Description:

Colt manufactured these Third Model Derringers from 1870 to 1912, and they were Colt's most popular single shot pocket pistols. This early example has the bulbous shaped front of the frame around the barrel screw and the high hammer. The barrel has a rounded blade front sight and "-COLT-" in italics on top. The frame has "S. L. H. to J. G. Helena MT Oct 26th 1870" on the left. No additional details were provided. Key events reported in Helena's local papers around that time revolved around the Franco-Prussian War, the recent Yellowstone Expedition, and the land surveys. It is possible "J.G." is Brevet Brigadier General John Gibbon or Helena based merchant and stockman Joseph Gans. Includes a brown leather holster.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 40% original blue finish, dark brown patina on the balance of the barrel, 60% original case colors on the hammer, strong original niter blue on the sides of the trigger, traces of original silver plating with dark aged patina on the frame, attractive natural aged patina on the exposed brass, distinct inscription and other markings, and mild overall wear including some dings and scratches. The right grip is cracked and has some slight flakes at the edges, but the left grip is fine and has light handling and storage marks. The holster is very good and has mild overall wear. Provenance: The John Fox Collection.
