Description:

This revolver was manufactured in 1853 and is the first revolver listed on Master Engraver Gustave Young's list of revolvers engraved in the work-month ending June 3, 1854 (framed copy included). The original list in the Connecticut State Library. It is also reproduced on page 55 of "The Book of Colt Engraving" by R.L. Wilson. Similar engraving can be seen on revolvers in the chapter "The Gustave Young Scroll." The revolver has Young's iconic inhabited and intertwining scroll engraving with punch dot backgrounds on all of the major metal components aside from the cylinder which has the classic Naval Battle of Campeche roll-scene. The barrel lug has a disgorging dog mask on the left, and another bestial mask is at the terminus of a tendril on the right below the hammer screw. Other areas feature floral blooms. The hammer has a somewhat simplified wolf head motif and six dots on the spur. The barrel has the New York City address on top, and the frame has the hand engraved "COLTS/PATENT" marking on the left. A factory "dot" marking is by the main serial numbers indicating the factory designated the revolver for engraving. Matching serial numbers appear on the various components aside from the replaced wedge which is marked "709." The grip is properly numbered to the revolver in the back strap inlet with "9720" and is checkered which is unusual for a Colt percussion revolver.

Rating Definition:

Very good with 75% period replated silver remaining and showing light tarnishing overall. The main loss is on the grip straps. The engraving and markings throughout remains distinct with few minor exceptions. There is some light pitting on the cylinder. The grip is also very good and has crisp coarse recut checkering and minor wear including some light dings. Mechanically fine. This is a very attractive Model 1851 Navy with Gustave Young's iconic engraving patterns. While many Colts are attributed to Gustave Young, very few have period documentation confirming they were engraved in his shop.
