Description:

This c. 1805-1810 saber is marked by New York based importers and retailers Lemuel Wells & Co. on the right side and matches the design on page 70 of "The American Eagle-Pommel Sword: The Early Years - 1794-1830" by Mobray and has a pommel similar to the "John Salter" eagle shown on page 66. The gold highlighted etching on the blade also included floral and martial motifs, an eagle and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on the left side, and Liberty on the right. The blade is curved and measures 29 1/4 inches straight, and the saber has an overall length of 34 3/4 inches measured straight. The hilt is gilded brass and has solid guard with floral designs, ten stars and an eagle and shield design with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on the knuckle bow, distinctive eagle, and a fluted antique ivory grip. The scabbard has gilded brass fittings and a leather body.

Rating Definition:

Fine with strong patches of gilding remaining on the blade, mix of silver-gray patina and mild pitting on the balance, nearly all of the refinished gold on the hilt, much of the original gold on the scabbard, thin age cracks and small chips as well as gap at the back of the grip, moderate wear and flaking on the leather mainly between the band and mouthpiece, and general mild overall wear. Provenance: Jay Reid Collection.
