Description:

Manufactured c. 1820-1840 in the mounted artillery officer's pattern with no visible maker's marks. Similar examples are pictured on p. 133 of "American Swords" by Flayderman and Mowbray. The curved blade is approximately 30 inches long with the lower half of each side finely etched, blued and gilded, showing floral motifs and a stand of arms with the shield from the great seal. Plain iron bird's head hilt with iron D-guard, plain languets, and wire wrapped leather grip. Includes a plain iron scabbard and a portion of a U.S. pattern sword belt with the circular great seal buckle.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine blade, showing mostly bright and retaining most of the nitre blue and gilt finishes with some scattered light spotting and edge nicks. The hilt iron shows mostly a dark brown patina with some light oxidation and retains nearly all of the leather grip with some loose wire wrap. The scabbard shows a mottle brown-grey patina with some light surface pitting. The belt is relic grade with only a portion remaining and heavy wear and the buckle shows a dark antique patina.
