Description:

This sword is marked "Sold by C & JD Wolfe New York" on the spine indicating it was sold by Christopher & John D. Wolfe between 1814 when John D. Wolfe inherited the business from his father and February 1, 1830, when the partnership was dissolved and was replaced by new partnerships between John D. Wolfe, Japheth Bishop, and John P. Coffin at 87 Maiden Lane and Christopher Wolfe, Adam W. Spies, and R. Smith Clark at 193 Pearl Street nearby. The curved blade is around 32 inches measured straight and has bright and gold accented floral, classical, and patriotic motifs including an interesting "head bowl" with feathers and foliage on the right above a spread wing American eagle and shield design with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in a banner niter blue background terminating in scroll patterns, "Warranted" on the left, "The "five-ball" hilt is silver plated brass and has a classic "Ketland Eagle" pommel, no back strap, and a spiral carved antique ivory grip. The scabbard is leather with silver plated brass fittings.

Rating Definition:

Very good with 40% original niter blue as well as gold in much of the etching on the otherwise bright or silver-gray blade, a few nicks at the edges, minor oxidation, traces of silver on the hilt and scabbard fittings, aged patina on the brass, and moderate crackling and flaking on the leather scabbard body. Provenance: Jay Reid Collection.
