Description:

This is a solid representative example of an Ames Revenue Cutter Service Model 1842 box lock percussion pistol with the "U.S.R./1843" marking at the tail of the lock. This marking is found on pistols that were acquired by the U.S. Revenue Marine or U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, which would later become what we know of as the U.S. Coast Guard. Marked "JCB/P" at the breech with what appears to be a faint "1843" date. The lock is marked "U.S.R./1843" vertically at the rear and "N.P. AMES/SPRINGFIELD/MASS." at the center. The stock has a faint cartouche on the left.

Rating Definition:

Good, showing mostly a bright patina on the iron and an attractive antique patina on the brass with some scattered light pitting and crisp markings apart from those mentioned above. The refinished wood is also good with some scattered minor sings and scratches. Mechanically fine.
