Description:

The barrel signature appears to read "A * Morr" or possibly "A * Moon." An A. Morr is recorded as active in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, around the 1830s-1840s in "American Gun Makers" by Gluckman and Satterlee but hasn't been located in more recent texts. The lock is marked "JOHN WALKER/WARRANTED." Similar patch box finials and other attributes seen on this rifle have been noted on multiple Pennsylvania rifles, including rifles from the Upper Susquehanna School. The stock has more than thirty silver inlays in a variety of shapes along with several additional horn and bone inlays. Some of the inlays fill pierced sections in the brass furniture such as the forend wear plate, the toe plate, and the comb plate. Some of the brass furniture has light border engraving, and the patch box lid has scroll and border engraving. The lock also has some line engraving. The nicely figured curly maple stock has a classic "Roman nose" profile of the butt, some nice moulding, and has "JD" carved in script (presumably the initials of the original owner) with a scroll accent on the left side of the butt behind the cheekpiece.

Rating Definition:

Very good with mix of dark brown patina mixed with applied brown along the barrel, dark brown patina on the lock, aged patinas on the silver and brass, moderate erosion at the breech, general mild wear overall, a few cracks in the stock including through the forend at the rear ramrod pipe, mild scratches and dings, and very attractive appearance overall. Mechanically fine.
