Description:

This fine Scottish flintlock shotgun was built c. 1815-20 by John Thomson of Edinburgh. It is signed "John Thomson/Edinboro" on the locks and "Makers to His Majesty, Princes Street, Edinboro" on the rib and has platinum "JOHN/THOMSON/PATENT" and "crown" marked hallmarks on the breech plugs. The Birmingham proofed barrels, breech plugs, and breech hooks all have the matching serial number. The breeches have platinum-lined vents and bands. The flat bevelled locks have waterproof pans, scroll and border engraving, and stepped tails. The furniture is also engraved with primarily scroll patterns. The nicely figured half-stock has a checkered wrist and silver wrist and wedge escutcheons.

Rating Definition:

Fine as professionally reconverted to flintlock with traces of an old rebrowned finish on the barrels along with distinct twist patterns and some spots of slight pitting, some traces of original blue finish on the trigger guard, mostly gray patina on the balance, and mild overall wear. The refinished stock has partially smoothed checkering, smooth oiled finish, nice figure and grain, minimal light dings and scratches, and a slight chip at the tail of the left lock. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
