Description:

The maker's have kindly confirmed that this extremely rare percussion combination gun was completed on June 22, 1842. Although noted in the records as a shotgun, it was built with the combination of a 14 bore smoothbore shot barrel and a 16 bore rifled barrel at a cost of £65 5 shillings. Although currently fitted with an offset stock for a left eye dominant shooter, there is no mention of this in the records. The rib has a bead style blade front sight and dovetailed notch rear sight with a platinum sight line as well as "J. PURDEY, 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON." signed on the breech. The breech plugs are platinum banded. The underside of the barrels have London proofs, the matching serial number, and "JP." The ramrod is also numbered to the gun. The locks and furniture have primarily classic scroll engraving. The former are also signed "PURDEY" below the sliding half-cock safeties. The stock has checkering on the forend and wrist, the noted rare offset, some nice figure, and a checkered buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good with nearly all of the professionally refinished brown remaining on the barrels along with distinct twist patterns, traces of original finish on the other components and otherwise a mix of silver gray and gray-brown patina, some minor pitting near the breech, mostly crisp markings and engraving, and general mild wear. The stock is also very good and has a few spots of minor wear in the otherwise crisp checkering, attractive figure mainly on the left, and some mild scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
