Description:

This mid-19th century combination set was identified as coming out of the armory of the Nizam of Hyderabad when sold as part of "The Midmar Castle Collection of Fine Arms and Armour" in 2010 by Lyon & Turnbull of Edinburgh. The case lid is inscribed "JOHN MIDDLETON/GLASGOW." The locks have small "CHARLES/INGRAM" markings and scroll and dog and bird themed engraving and stepped tails. The furniture has mostly scroll engraving, and the trigger guard bow has a scene with a reposed lioness. The stock has a smooth forend, a checkered wrist, shotgun butt with no cheekpiece, and a 14 1/2 inch length of pull. The 12 gauge smoothbore set is signed "CHARLES INGRAM UNION STREET GLASGOW" on the rib and has a bead front sight, and the .62 caliber belted ball barrel set is signed "CHARLES INGRAM" and "GLASGOW" and has a low dovetailed blade front sight and express rear sights consisting of three leaves graduated "100," "150," and "200" along with a folding ladder with sliding notch. The case has some cleaning equipment, container with primers, oiler, flask, capper, T-shaped nipple wrench with spare nipples, lock screw, the rear sling eye, a powder flask, and a short flask spout as well as spots for additional tools and ammunition.

Rating Definition:

Very good with nearly all of the professionally restored brown finish on the shot barrels and over half of the older refinished brown on the belted ball barrels, smooth gray patina on the locks and furniture, some minor pitting, mostly distinct markings and engraving, and general mild overall wear. The stock is also very good and has some small cracks at the edges, a repaired flake at the tail of the left lock, filled knot on the right side of the butt, scratches and dents mostly by the toe, and mild overall wear. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good and has mild age and storage related wear and some repairs. The accessories are fine and have moderate wear including some dents on the flask. Overall, a very interesting set by one of Scotland's best gunmakers that has been identified as owned by the Nizam of Hyderabad and later part of the Midmar Castle collection. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
