Description:

The maker’s records note that this 16 bore double percussion rifle was completed in 1849. The records note two names against this serial number, a Captain Foley and a J.P. Cockerrell. The matching numbered "Damascus" twist barrels have two groove rifling for use with winged bullets, a dovetailed blade front sight, London proofs and "CL" maker's marks on the bottom, and a "CHARLES LANCASTER. 151, NEW BOND ST. LONDON" signature on the rib behind the replacement three leaf rear sight (100 and 150 yard folding leaves). The locks are signed "C. LANCASTER/LONDON" at the front and have sliding half-cock safeties ahead of the hammers and scroll engraving. The furniture is also scroll and floral engraved and also features the following game scenes: stag and hind on the round patch box, a running stag on the trigger guard bow, and a running tiger on the buttplate heel tang. The stock has the matching serial number twice inside the forend, a checkered forend and wrist, raised cheekpiece, an unidentified crest inscribed on the silver escutcheon ahead of the sling stud, checkered buttplate, and a 14 1/4 inch length of pull. The oak takedown case contains a matching numbered winged bullet mold, two mainsprings, and compartments for additional accessories.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 40% original brown finish and distinct twist patterns along the barrels, 25% original case colors, 30% original blue finish on the furniture, patches of oxidation and pitting mainly on the barrels, some repairs/filled knots on the stock, crisp checkering and engraving, and general mild dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The relined case is very good and has mild storage wear, and the mold is also very good and has some light oxidation and mild wear. A very interesting express rifle clearly meant for the Indian market. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
