Finish: blue/gold inlaid

Stock: fancy checkered walnut
Item Views: 1882
Item Interest: Active
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 248
Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun
Description:

This pair was engraved for American soldier and politician Lloyd M. Bentsen by renowned Master Engraver Angelo Bee. Bentsen was a pilot during World War II, flying some 35 missions over enemy territory and earning the rank of lt. colonel by the age of 27. He then ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in Texas' 15th district where he served from 1948-1955, he then became a Texas senator in 1971 and served until 1993 when he was appointed Secretary of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton. He also attempted a run for president in 1976 and was on the ticket as Michael Dukakis' running mate in 1988. The guns show beautiful scroll engraving covering the action and surrounding a gold relief steerhead on one side, and eagle on the other, a dog head on the trigger guard, and the seal of the United States Senate on the underside. Two matching scroll wedges are present on either barrel at the breech as well as the numbers "1" and "2" on guns "A" and "B" respectively. The initials "LMB" and the number "1" are engraved and gold filled on the grip cap. Both guns have matted solid ribs, 2 3/4 inch chambers, and "WS-2"/"WS-1" marked chokes (although both have been made to accept interchangeable choke tubes). Alvin Whites' signature is found on the right-hand side of the trigger guard and reads "A.A.WHITE ENG." Mounted in nicely figured walnut stocks with beavertail forend and fluer-de-lis style fancy checkering. Stock measurements: drop at comb 1 7/16 inches; drop at heel 2 5/8 inches; length of pull 14 13/16 inches.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine as embellished by Master Engraver A. A. White, retaining 95% blue finish, mild handling evidence, a slight plum patina on the action, and light wear on the working surfaces. The wood is very fine with a few small scratches, some varnish loss, and sharp checkering. Some separation of the rib from the barrels near the breech. Mechanically excellent.

Type: Shotgun
Gauge: 12
Barrel: 26 inch solid rib
Finish: blue/gold inlaid
Grip:
Stock: fancy checkered walnut

Signed by Angelo Bee to the right of the triggerguard and "LMB" on the grip cap. Barrel and stock measurements: 2 3/4 inch chambers (the barrels have been threaded for interchangeable chokes); chokes marked "WS-1"/"WS-2"; drop at comb 1 7/8 inches; drop at heel 2 3/4 inches; length of pull 14 1/2 inches.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine as embellished by Master Engraver A. A. White, retaining 97% blue finish, minor handling evidence, and some light wear at the working surfaces. The wood is very good with a few minor nicks, loss of varnish on the butt, and sharp checkering overall. Some separation of the rib from the barrels near the muzzles. Mechanically excellent.
