Description:

Incorporating George Jeffries British Patent no. 7895 of June 30, 1885 for a self-cocking hammergun with ejector mechanism. George Jeffries was an innovative gunmaker who lived and worked in the East Anglian city of Norwich in Norfolk, England and is recorded as active from 1841 until around 1897. Blackened barrels with solid concave matted rib marked " G. JEFFRIES NORWICH. JEFFRIES PATENT EJECTOR" and marked with a stylized "3" on the breech end, ejectors and single front bead. With London reproof marks and 2 1/2" chambers. Back action side lock self-cocking action with percussion fences, light scroll engraving and signed "G. JEFFRIES" on each lock and stylized "3" on the top tang. Blued sidelever and trigger guard, each with matching scroll engraving. Checkered rounded pistol grip stock with engraved furniture, blank silver initial escutcheon, and horn buttplate. The leather bound partitioned case has a George Jeffries leather label on the interior of the lid.

Rating Definition:

Retaining nearly all of the reblued barrel finish. Action has a mottled silver and grey patina, sharp checkering and some light pitting. Sidelever and trigger guard reblued with softened engraving. Revarnished stock has refreshed sharp checkering with some light handling marks and several small cracks coming off the forend shoe as well as some light chipping. Mechanically very good with the right ejector having sheared the top pin, but appears to still be functional. The case is good with absent latch, latch mechanism and straps, wear and some missing stitching. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
