Description:

This model was introduced in 1881 and was primarily manufactured in .44 Russian. All of the frames are listed as manufactured pre-1899 making all of these revolvers antiques. This very attractive and fairly early example was embellished by a retailer and has very nice line and scroll engraving, nickel plating on the barrel and frame, gold plating on the cylinder and hammer, and a set of pearl grips with a steer head carved in raised relief on the right panel. The back strap is inscribed with the initials "J.R.B." The other markings and features are standard. The identity of "J.R.B." is not documented, but you can imagine a deluxe revolver like this with steer head grips would be popular with a western cattleman. Cattle ranching was a major business in the West in the late 19th century. The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver with a 6 inch barrel, blue finish and checkered black hard rubber grips when shipped on October 18, 1882 and delivered to M.W. Robinson Co., New York City.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as period retailer embellished with crisp engraving and markings 95% plus of the bright nickel plating remaining, 25% gold remaining primarily in the recessed areas, strong original case colors on the trigger, traces of niter blue on the small parts, smooth gray patina on most of the faded areas, a few spots of slight oxidation, and generally only minor age and handling related wear overall. The grips are fine and have attractive natural iridescent tones, crisp steer head carving on the right, mild chipping at the edges, and minor handling wear. Mechanically fine. This is a very attractive antique Smith & Wesson complete with excellent period embellishment including a classic steer head carved grip. Provenance: The John Fox Collection.
