Manufactured post-1898 with the early style casehardened receiver, which was only standard on Model 1886 rifles manufactured before 1902, standard two-line address and caliber marking on the barrel, model designation on the upper tang, and the two-line patent dates and serial number on the lower tang. The left side of the lower tang is marked "83XX", with "83" repeated in the stock inlet and on the inside of the buttplate. The special order part octagon barrel is fitted with Lyman beaded blade front, Marble's elevation adjustable notch rear, and tang mounted peep sights. Mounted with a finely figured, "H" pattern checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with hard rubber grip cap, sling swivels, and a crescent buttplate.

Fine, retains 75% plus original blue finish and 40% original case colors with the balance mostly a smooth grey patina, some slight thinning on the magazine to a plum brown patina, and a few scattered patches of very light surface pitting. The wood is also fine with some minor dings and scratches scattered throughout, a semi-circular hairline crack visible in the wrist, a large area of discoloration on the right of the buttstock, and mostly crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
