Description:

Manufactured in 1864. The rifle has the distinctive Henry brass receiver without the sight dovetail and brass buttplate. The barrel is fitted with a German blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line Henry's patent date/New Haven address legend ahead of the rear sight and the serial number "5358" at the breech. The matching serial number appears on the barrel, left side of the lower tang, stock inlet, and buttplate. The left side of the stock has a sling swivel, and the left side of the barrel has a screw fastened ring for a sling hook. The trapdoor buttplate contains a four piece steel cleaning rod. Most Henry rifles manufactured during the Civil War were privately purchased by Federal soldiers from Midwestern regiments. The firepower of the Henry rifles was valued on the frontier in the years that followed the Civil War. Most Henry rifles were "working guns;" the surviving examples typically exhibit wear associated with years of hard use.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus overall as a Henry rifle with great "working gun" character, proudly wearing its scars as its beauty. The barrel and magazine have an untouched mottled gray patina. The fine brass has an attractive mellow aged appearance. Tight fitting receiver sideplates. The otherwise fine buttstock has typical "working gun" character including a stress crack in the wrist. Mechanically excellent. A definite survivor for the collector looking for a Henry with a been there, done that appearance. The stories it could tell!
