Description:

Originally manufactured as a Second Model rifle in 1880 with standard markings, dust cover rail retained by a screw, and dust cover with rear serrations. The included Buffalo Bill Historical Center letter lists it as a rifle with round barrel and set trigger when received at the warehouse on 31 December 1880 and shipped on 1 September 1881 along with four other rifles with the same specifications. It has British proofs on the barrel and receiver, and was possibly converted to carbine configuration by a British retailer. The set trigger components are absent. Fitted with blade front and two-leaf rear sights, with a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. Mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a trapdoor carbine buttplate containing one section of a cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Fine as period converted to carbine configuration, retains 40% blue finish and traces of case colors on the hammer and lever with the balance mostly a smooth brown patina and some scattered light surface pitting. The left sideplate has been cold blued. The refinished wood is very good with some minor dings and scratches scattered throughout and showing slightly proud at the tangs and buttplate. Mechanically excellent.
