Description:

This rolling block rifle has a lot of Old West appeal and is the type of rifle popularly used in western rifle matches in the late 19th century. The caliber is unmarked but appears to be .45-70 which was very popular on the frontier. The left side of the frame has a "P", and the three-line Remington marking ending in the 1871 patent date is on the upper tang under the Vernier peep sight. A partially covered "GTON/STEEL" (REMINGTON/CAST STEEL) marking is on the bottom of the barrel at the breech. The barrel and action appear to have been left in the white. The barrel has a windgauge globe front sight with spirit level and no rear sight dovetail. The forearm has a pewter forend cap. The narrow buttstock has a crescent steel buttplate. Provenance: The John Fox Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine with mostly dark brown patina characteristically found on frontier firearms, generally mild oxidation and pitting, heavier oxidation on the buttplate, some areas of gray patina on the frame, bright metal in protected areas, and mild overall wear. The wood is also fine and has mild scratches and dings and attractive hand-worn oiled finish. Mechanically fine. This classic Remington rifle would have been well-suited for use at the 1875 Montana Territorial Match and other classic western rifle matches.
