Description:

Winchester Model 1883 bolt action musket with standard markings and features besides the forearm cap with a bar made to mount a Lee-Metford pattern 1888 bayonet; the bar fills the tip of the cleaning rod channel, and the rifle is not fitted with the cleaning rod found on rifles that mount a socket bayonet. (This adaptation was likely made for a specific order for a militia or guard unit). The top of the buttplate is numbered "24". This particular musket lacks the proof and inspection markings found on Winchester-Hotchkiss muskets that were purchased by the Ordnance Department.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retaining 97% original blue finish on the barrel with some light muzzle wear, some light handling marks, and light wear mixed with some brown patina on the barrel bands and bolt handle. 95% bright original case colors on the receiver with some scattered freckling concentrated on the right side and on the trigger guard. Stock is very fine with some light scratches, dents, handling marks, a darkened gouge visible at the tip of the comb, and a small chip at the toe. Mechanically excellent.
