Scarce U.S. Springfield Armory Ward-Burton Model 1871 Trials Bolt Action Rifle with Bayonet

The U.S. Model 1871 Ward-Burton was the first bolt action centerfire rifle used by the U.S. Military. 1,011 of these rifles were manufactured at Springfield Armory with intent for troop field trials to compare against the Trapdoor and Rolling Block rifles. Most of the Ward-Burton rifles were sent West for testing against the elements and harsh nature of the battles during the Indian War era. They were not enthusiastically received by troops due to suffering many breakages and issues with dirt finding its way into the bolt lugs, making these a scarce item for the collector. It has the standard bayonet stud/blade front sight, notch and folding ladder rear sight, an eagle and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD 1871" on the left side of the receiver, "WARD.BURTON. PATENT./DEC.20.1859. FEB.21.1871" on top of the bolt cover, a smooth straight wrist stock a slotted metal ramrod, sling swivels, and a "US" marked buttplate. Includes a "US" marked socket bayonet.

ConditionFine with a bright polished finish and some scattered very light pin prick pitting. The re-oiled wood is very good with an overall smooth surface, discoloration from field handling marks, and some light dents and scratches. The bayonet is good with some scattered light pitting and sharp markings. Mechanically excellent.
