Description:

The Model 1862 Police is by some accounts the most attractive of all of Colt's percussion revolvers and is certainly one of the most advanced. It combined the improved "creeping" loading lever, round barrel and rebated cylinder of the Model 1860 Army with the smaller, easier to carry size of the ever popular Model 1849 Pocket along with attractive flutes on the cylinder and the more useful power of the Model 1851 Navy. This excellent early example was manufactured in 1862. The top of the barrel has the one-line New York address. A cylinder flute is stamped with the patent date. The left side of the frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT." The left side of the trigger guard is stamped "36 CAL." The wedge is numbered to another gun ("2724"). Matching serial numbers are on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder and arbor pin. The barrel and cylinder have the high polished blue finish. The loading lever, hammer and frame are casehardened. Both brass grip straps are plated in silver. The revolver is fitted with a one-piece varnish walnut grip. Provenance: The Mac McCroskie Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel and cylinder retain 90% plus bright original high polished blue finish with slight thinning to brown and high edge wear on the balance. The loading lever, hammer and frame retain 98% vivid original case colors. The grip straps retain 40% plus original silver plating with the exposed brass having an attractive appearance. The grip is also excellent with some minor handling marks and retaining nearly all original varnish. Mechanically excellent. A highly attractive Model 1862 Police revolver worthy of even the most advanced Colt collections. Difficult to improve upon!
