This is a fine example of a Civil War era Colt Model 1861 Special rifle-musket. An estimated 100,000 in total of these Colt rifle-muskets were manufactured throughout the Civil War under contract with the Union and state governments. This example has standard markings and features, with an 1863 dated lock, 1862 dated barrel, and "N.J." New Jersey marking on the left of the breech and left stock flat. The barrel is fitted with a blued rear sight with two folding leaves graduated to 500 yards.

Fine. There is some very light scattered surface pitting on the otherwise bright metal. The rear sight has nearly all of the refinished blue finish. All of the markings are crisp. The stock is also fine with some light handling marks and some occasional dents. Included bayonet is very fine with some patches of light pitting and handling marks. Mechanically excellent. This is Colt Model 1861 Special Rifle-Musket would make a fine addition to any U.S. military collection.
