Description:

Reportedly 255,040 Model 1863 Type II, also known as Model 1864, rifle-muskets were manufactured in 1864-1865. These Type IIs are nearly identical to the Model 1863 Type I before it, but now with spring retained barrel bands and a simplified single leaf rear sight. This example is dated "1864" on the lock and barrel. These rifles are significant in the history of U.S. martial arms, as they armed Union troops and saw widespread use in the latter years of the Civil War. They are the last U.S. regulation muzzle loading arm. The left stock flat is marked with two circled script cartouches with one that appears to read "MTH" and the other "ESA" (Erskine S. Allin). Includes a U.S. socket bayonet and a brass tipped leather scabbard.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining most of the bright finish. The barrel, barrel bands, buttplate and trigger guard have a smooth finish with scattered very light pitting and do not appear to have been repolished. The barrel markings are very crisp, and the edges of the flats are sharp and distinct. The blued rear sight with mostly mottled brown surface corrosion. 95% vivid original case colors retained on the casehardened lock and hammer. The lock and bolster markings are crisp. The re-oiled stock is very fine and does not appear to have been sanded, with very small chips ahead of the lock, a few chips on the side of the ramrod channel ahead of the middle band, some scuffs on the left behind the middle band, some scattered light scratches and dents, and crisp cartouches. Included bayonet is very fine with some dried grease, some patches of very light pitting, and sharp edges. The scabbard is very fine with a cracked portion of the belt frog, some light wear, and fine dark patina on the brass tip. This is a very fine example of the primary rifle-musket issued to the Federal armies during the last years of the Civil War.
