The makers have kindly confirmed that this interesting shotgun was completed on September 8, 1865 as a best double pinfire shotgun for a Charles Barry Esq. at a cost of £33. 12s. using Joseph Needham’s patent no. 1544 of 1862 making this a cutting-edge design at the time. Subsequently converted to centerfire during its working life, with characteristic Rigby etched Damascus barrels each engraved with a band of stylized foliage at the breech end, and single extractor. Concave etched Damascus rib with bead sight and signed “Wm. & Jno. RIGBY. DUBLIN” in gothic script. Single bite action with fences incorporating external cams which push the hammers back to the half cock position on opening the action. Non-rebounding sidelocks each signed “W. & J. RIGBY” in gothic script. The whole engraved with characteristic Rigby scrollwork. The underside of the barrels and water table struck with Birmingham nitro reproof marks. Well figured 14 3/4 inch walnut straight hand stock including checkered dark horn buttplate, and panels of multipoint checkering to the grip and permanently attached forearm. Barrel measurements (R/L): reproved at 18.7mm/18.7mm (.736 inches), measuring 18.7mm/18.7mm (.736 inches), chokes .005/.003 inches, 65 mm (2 1/2 in.) chambers, minimum wall thickness .025/.025. This rare hammer gun has a nicely aged patina. The whole has a grey patina, the barrels retain softened definition to the etched finish, some patches of discoloration from corrosion spotting. Engraving to the action and locks is clear, left lock not as positive in its action as the right lock, traces of original casehardened finish remaining. Stock refinished, occasional storage and handling blemishes, checkering well defined, and a few hairline cracks at the wrist. Mechanically very good. Case in good condition, has been recently relined and refitted, some exterior storage and handling marks.
