Description:

The Long Land Pattern aka 1st Model "Brown Bess" muskets were the primary infantry weapon of the British Empire in the 18th century. This musket is the 1742 pattern with a bridled flash pan. Many were used during the Jacobite Rising of 1745, in the Seven Years War (French & Indian War in America), and by both the British Army and the American revolutionaries during the American Revolution. Many were shortened to the 42 inch Short Land Pattern length in the late 18th century making original full length muskets particularly desirable. This musket was part of a collection acquired by International Military Antiques that was previously on display at the Princeton Battlefield State Park Thomas Clarke House Museum for 20 years as part of the "Arms of the Revolution" exhibit. Documentation from the transfer in 2018 is included. The musket was also shown in the May 1994 issue of "Gun Report" in the article "Colonial Firearms Displayed at the Princeton Battlefield" by Ahearn (copy of the article included) in which the lock marking is shown up close and the musket is noted as from the John Ferris collection. This musket most likely saw considerable use in both the French & Indian War and American Revolution. The early lock has a slightly rounded "banana" profile and has the Georgian cipher at the center and "JORDAN/1745" on the tail (Thomas Jordan of Birmingham). The barrel has a bayonet lug that doubles as the front sight, a "*" stamp, and ordnance proofs and an "*/IW" maker's mark in the breech section. The furniture is all brass and is the standard style for the period. The stock has the reduced swell of the 1742 pattern, the raised carving around the barrel tang, and a crudely cut "IC" on the left side of the butt. It has a later trumpet head iron ramrod, an "E" marked socket bayonet, and a leather scabbard with brass fittings for the bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Very good as reconverted to flintlock configuration with mix of brown staining and gray patina on the lock and barrel as well as mild pitting, aged patina on the brass, mild dings and scratches, and general mild wear. The refinished stock is fair and has some cracks and repairs concentrated in the forend and around the lock, mild dings and scratches, some general dings and scratches, and moderate overall wear. The bayonet is good and has mottled gray patina, mild pitting, and moderate wear. The scabbard is good and has complete but deteriorated leather and aged patina on the brass. Overall a nice representative example of the historically significant British Long Land Pattern Brown Bess.
