Casehardened border and scroll engraved breech with screw-in plug, standing breech and lock, the last signed “JOHN COLE”. Figured walnut three-quarter length walnut stock with checkered grip and forearm. Blued border and scroll engraved furniture comprising buttplate and trigger guard, the latter incorporating the rear sling mount and with chain retained nipple protector. Original iron ramrod. London proof marks.

Rating Definition:

This extremely unusual volunteer rifle remains in very good condition. The barrel retaining 60% older mellowed rebrowned finish, some scattered minor spots of surface corrosion mostly towards the muzzle. Barrel bands and furniture each retaining traces of original blued finish, mostly in sheltered areas, the remainder turned brown with age. The breech, standing breech and lock each retaining traces of original casehardened finish, again mostly in sheltered areas, the remainder a grey patina. Engraving remains crisp and clear throughout. Stock in very good condition with crisp checkering, some age related bruising and marking throughout, mostly minor. Mechanically excellent.
