Description:

This impressive volley gun from c. 1840 has a cluster of seven barrels that can be screwed off of the action. Each barrel aside from the central barrel has a threaded breech plug. The flash from the nipple ignites at the central barrel and through corresponding channels into the other six for near simultaneous ignition. The barrels have alternating London proof and view marks. The barrel group rib has a blade front sight and is signed "NEWARK." A brass tipped ramrod is fitted below the barrels. The scroll and bird engraving back action lock is inscribed "Boaler & Welch/Newark." The stock has a checkered wrist. Robert Boaler and Joseph Welch dissolved their partnership on June 13, 1843. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine as refinished and altered. The shortened barrel group has a smooth mix of refinished brown and aged patina. The lock and other remaining metal components have mostly smooth gray and brown patina with some light pitting and general mild wear. The stock is an old replacement and has distinct checkering, mild scrapes and dings, chipping at the toe, and smooth oiled finish. Mechanically fine.
