Description:

Dobson & Baker was formed in 1822 were primarily merchants and gun dealers. A few Dobson & Baker pistols intended for the Ottoman market with elaborate silver mounts and gold accents are known. A pistol of this quality would certainly have been worthy of presentation by an influential leader. The smoothbore, two-stage barrel has a silver blade front sight, "56 CHISWELL ST LONDON" on top of the octagonal breech section, a gold vent liner, dual gold bands at the breech, "W-JONES" and Birmingham proofs on the bottom, a low notch rear sight at the front of the tang, and floral and sunburst engraving on the tang. The rainproof lock has "DOBSON & BAKER" signed at the center, sliding half-cock safety, stepped tail, and light floral and sunburst engraving. The silver furniture has a variety of raised martial and floral designs which include Ottoman themed elements like scimitars and crescent moons. The trigger guard tang and pommel cap tendrils have "F&J" maker's marks and Birmingham hallmarks for 1817. The stock has a faux ramrod under the forend which is in keeping with regional preferences for carrying ramrods separately with the other loading equipment and elaborate silver inlaid vine and floral designs along the whole length. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection

Rating Definition:

Very good with refurbished brown finish and bright original gold on the barrel along with some minor pitting, dark gray patina on the lock along with mild pitting, aged patina on the silver mounts and inlays, a few pieces of inlay absent, and general mild wear. The stock is fine and has some material absent above the rear of the lock, repaired forend tip, and mild scratches and dings. Mechanically fine.
