Description:

The case lid is inscribed: "Ehrenpreis/für das/Officier Reiten auf der/Bahn mit Hindernissen/Dusseldorf in Juni 1843/Adolph Georg Erb=Prinz zu Schaumburg=Lippe" (Honorary award for the officer riding on the track with obstacles Dusseldorf in June 1843 Adolph Georg, Hereditary Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe). The presentation was from the future Adolph I of Schaumburg-Lippe (reigned 1860-1893) to an officer who participated in a steeplechase race. In the included research and provenance documents, a February 5, 1937, document from the Union Klub General-Sekretariat indicates a race took place in Dusseldorf in June 1843 and a Lieutenant Baron von dem Bussche-Munch raced on the Adolph's unnamed bay mare. The pistols were later owned by Commander Ernest Eagling who was an intelligence officer on the USS Arizona during the Bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was on shore during the bombing, and this cased set was in a waterproof safe and went down with the ship. They were recovered by a diver hired by Eagling from the stateroom of the Arizona. They were later sold to Dr. Edward M. Winskill as detailed in the copy of a notarized statement from Dr. John C Winskill, the former's son, and attested by William La Jeret. Jeret was a gunsmith for Chet Paulson who helped broker the sale. The cased set is featured on GermanHuntingGuns.com in their page on Guntermann and noted as inherited by Winskill from his father. The pistols from Carl Guntermann of Dusseldorf have rifled Damascus barrels with gold bands at the muzzles, gold wire inlays around the dovetailed blade front sights, "C. GUNTERMANN. IN. DUSSELDORF." signed on top in gold inlay, additional gold inlays at the breech, and engraved breech plugs. The upper tangs also have engraving and gold inlays as well as notch rear sights and gold inlaid "1" and "2" respectively. The locks and furniture have gold wire borders and scroll engraving. The pistols have adjustable single set triggers. The stocks have relief carved scroll patterns on the forend tips and fluted wrists. The case interior is closely fit and has a mallet/loading rod, combination screwdriver and nipple wrench, ball mold, powder flask with deer scene, mainspring vice, cleaning rod, nipple wrench, cap tin, and balls.

Rating Definition:

Fine with light patination on the otherwise bright metal, distinct engraving and Damascus patterns, and mild overall wear. The stock is fine and has a small crack between the lock and bolster, faint repaired crack on the opposite side, small filled spots, a small chip on the right side of the forend, smooth oil finish, minor dings and scratches, and crisp carving. The case is good and has a crack in the lid and mild overall age and storage related wear. The accessories are fine and have mild wear from age and use, especially on the mallet.

B) Guntermann Percussion Pistol

Type: Pistol
Gauge: 44
Barrel: 9 7/8 inch octagon
Finish: bright/gold
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 1845
Serial Number:

As described in "A."

Rating Definition:

Fine with mostly bright metal surfaces displaying some minor patination, distinct markings and engraving, strong original Damascus twist patterns, and mild overall wear. The stock is also fine and has crisp carving, some minor dings and scratches, smooth finish, and general mild wear. Mechanically fine. This is an interesting and attractive pair of pistols tied to a lesser known German prince in 1843 and the historic and tragic bombing of Pearl Harbor and the sinking of the USS Arizona almost a century later on December 7, 1941.
