Description:

George W. Tryon of Philadelphia was one of the most significant gunmakers and retailers in the early American republic. Early in his career he produced pistols, rifles, and muskets for the U.S. government and state militias and also produced and imported civilian arms, manufactured and imported parts used by other gunmakers, and retailed other sporting goods. There is a fair amount of variety in Tryon arms. These pistols are very English in their overall style, but do not bear London or Birmingham proofs suggesting they are domestic products rather than imports. They were likely meant for general use by a gentleman, perhaps as "traveling pistols," but they certainly could have been used in a duel. They are signed "TRYON" on the locks and "TRYON PHILADA" on the barrels. The barrels are rifled and have detailed blade front sights. The breech plugs have gold bands and liners along with scroll engraving. The locks and furniture are also engraved primarily with scroll patterns. The spurred trigger guards enclose adjustable single set triggers. The wedge and wrist escutcheons are gold. The stocks have checkered wrists with slightly flared pommels. They come in a nicely figured case with nickel-silver corner protectors and central plaque along with a loading and cleaning rod, Eley cap tin, screwdriver, "TRYON PHILADA" marked ball and bullet mold, and a silver plated brass powder flask with compartments for balls and caps and embossed oak leaf and acorn patterns.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The pistol has over 90% of the professionally restored brown, blue, and casehardened finishes remaining. The ramrod pipe is detached and there are small gaps in the forend tip and between the forend and the ramrod entry pipe. The stock is also very fine and has crisp checkering, smooth finish, and minor handling and storage marks. The lightly aged gold is bright. The engraving and markings are crisp. Mechanically excellent. The refinished and relined case is very good with mild storage related wear and the corner piece on the left rear absent. The accessories are also very fine and have minor age and storage related wear. The flask retains over 90% of the lightly aged silver plating.
