Manufactured circa 1888. With blued barrels each engraved with a bouquet and scroll spray at the breech end, and with concave rib with bead sight, numbered “2” (of a pair), signed “W.W. GREENER. 68 HAYMARKET LONDON. WINNER AT THE LONDON GUN TRIALS 1875, 1877, 1878 & 1879”, and engraved “PATENT WEDGE FAST” at the rib extension. Casehardened scallop back action with serpentine fences, Greener patent cross bolt, blued toplever and floor plate, “Jumping Jack” hold-open pin and signed “W.W. GREENER” on each side. Blued Greener patent side mounted safety catch with gold inlaid “SAFE”, and blued trigger guard. Fine bouquet and scroll engraving throughout. The underside of the barrels and water table each with Birmingham black powder and nitro reproof marks, the water table numbered “2”, struck with a Greener “Elephant” trademark, and “1310 / PATENT 2003” (Greener’s 1881 patent for the Self-Acting Ejector mechanism, use number 1310). Well-figured 14 3/4 inch semi-pistol grip stock with checkered butt, grip and forearm, the latter with blued Deeley & Edge fastener and dark horn tip. The underside of the butt with blank gold oval initial escutcheon. In fitted brass cornered oak lined leather case lined with red baize, the lid with black leather W.W. Greener trade label with gilt lettering. The lid with brass plaque named to “RICHARD WHEATLEY/MIRFIELD”. Proved at 18.6mm/18.6mm (.732 inches), measuring 18.4mm/18.4mm (.724 inches), 2 3/4 inch (70mm) chambers, choke constriction .010/.022, minimum wall thickness 0.035/0.035, cast off. Very good as refurbished. The barrels retain 98% of their reblued finish, all engravings and the signature remain crisp. There is a discolored band at each muzzle apparently from storage. The action retains 15% faded original casehardened finish, engraving crisp. The trigger guard has been reblued with some covered up pitting on the tang. The stock has been expertly replaced, probably at great expense, and is virtually blemish free. Mechanically excellent. The case is generally in good refurbished condition.
