This c. 1877-1884 shotgun has a bead front sight right at the muzzle, "WESTLEY RICHARDS 170 NEW BOND ST LONDON." signed on the rib, "WESTLEY RICHARDS" signed in banners on the sides of the frame surrounded by tight English scroll engraving, dog and bird scene engraved on the trigger guard bow, "855" marked on each barrel at the breech, "3459" on the shared extractor and the water table, "WESTLEY RICHARDS" right above the release, automatic tang safety with gold "SAFE" marking, checkered forearm and round knob semi-pistol grip stock with solid recoil pad, and matching serial numbers on the barrels, forearm, and lower tang (latter partially obscured by the screw). The silver escutcheon on the bottom of the stock has "FRANK H. ELLIS/Philadelphia." This may have been owned by respected horse breeder Frank Howell Ellis (1845-1925) of Philadelphia who owned several winning horses. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): chambers measured at 3 inches; bores 9 inches from the breech both proved at 10 (.775 inches) and measured at .784/.784 inches; choke constriction .000/.021 inches; 1 3/4 inch drop at comb; 3 inch drop at heel; 14 1/16 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 8 lbs 7 oz. Very good with 75% of the lightly fading brown finish, 85% blue finish, 60% case colors, the noted added trigger guard tang screw, crisp engraving and markings, general light scratches and marks, and minor overall wear. The wood is also very good and has crisp checkering, attractive figure, light scratches, a few minor dings, and minor overall wear. Mechanically excellent.
